It’s been a long day. Maybe the kids have drawn in felt tip pen all over the walls. Maybe the dog has eaten the one nice pair of heels you own. Maybe the metropolitan line’s air con wasn’t working. It’s been a long day…
BUT! There is a beautiful, soothing, gloriously secluded room upstairs containing a haven of calm. Your bathroom. Within it lies a place of solace; a deep soaking heaven where all your troubles can be steamed away…
The bath.
But not just any bath. This bath is your detox bath.

-This can be done in your own home (Or someone else’s, if you don't have a bath)

- Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate/bicarbonate of soda)
- Sea Salt or Himalayan Salt
- Unfiltered and unprocessed Apple Cider Vinegar
- Favorite essential oil if desired
- Ground ginger (optional)
- Skin brush
- Flowers (Optional again—We love it, as it makes us feel fancy & to make the bath feel even more luxurious)
Step 1...
Prepare your body for Relaxation & Detox!
The minerals in a detox bath pull toxins from your skin, which can be dehydrating, so make sure you are fully hydrated before getting into a detox bath! It’s recommended that you drink on full glass of room temperature water before.
Step 2... (If you can)
Dry Brush your skin!
Your skin is your largest organ, it is the front line of defence against chemicals and bacteria that we face all day, everyday. Our skin works hard. This is a treat not only for you- but for your hard working skin!
By dry brushing your skin you are assisting your body in shedding dead layers of skin, leading to the removal of these harmful agents hanging around on your skin. Dry brushing also helps to speed up your lymphatic system’s ability to eliminate bad toxins and bacteria on the skin- meaning once you are in your wonderful bath detox it will pull even more bad bacteria and toxins from your body, leaving a happy, healthier, glowing skin! YEY!
-Make sure you use a dry brush, preferably with a long handle- so you can reach everywhere on your bod!
-Choose a brush that feels nice on the skin, dry brushing shouldn’t be painful.
-Start from the feet up and work in circular motions.
-Move up in sweeping motions towards your heart and make your up to your middle section (your front and your back) and then across your chest.
-Finish by move the brush up your arms towards your armpits
-After the very first session you should be able to feel a big difference in your skin.
Step 3...
Give yourself a Lymphatic Massage!
The lymphatic system is part of your body’s defence and by massaging the following areas can help to stimulate your body to detox more effectively:
-Place your fingers under your ears on either side of your neck.
-With relaxed hands, gently pull your skin downwards towards the back of your neck.
-Repeat this 10 times by gradually starting your movement lower down from your ear, eventually ending with fingers placed on top of your shoulders on either side of your neck.
-Gently massage your skin towards your collarbone.
-Repeat until you are satisfied. (We repeat 5-6 times)
What to expect:
Sometimes detox processes can cause symptoms such as headaches and nausea. This is a result of the toxins leaving your body. This is nothing to worry about- it will pass! Just make sure you take a litre of water to the bath with you and drink it slowly during the bath. This will keep you hydrated and stop any headaches or nausea. We like to add lemon to our water, as this can also help settle the sicky feeling!
Pick the perfect time:
We get it, life is stressful! When you are having your detox bath make sure you prepare your bath on a day when you have at least 1 hour available to yourself. Pick a time when you feel most relaxed and focus on the detox process, so life’s stresses don’t get in the way.
Create the right atmosphere:
We prefer doing our detox bath in the morning, with natural lighting, but we also find its equally effective to dim the lights, light some candles if they help you relax, play some soothing music and take deep breaths to help your mind and body enter a state of relaxation!!
The Perfect Mix:
- Fill the bath with comfortably warm/hot water.
- Add Epsom Salts (Soaking your body in Epsom salts help to replenish your body’s magnesium level, combats hypertension and the sulphate flushes toxins and helps to form proteins in brain tissue and within the joints- what magic stuff!!
- Add 1-2 cups of baking soda.( Baking soda is amazing for its cleansing ability, it has antifungal properties and helps leave the skin feeling super soft!)
- Add 1/4 cup of sea salt to Himalayan Salt. (Its main components are magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride and bromides - all the good stuff! The sea salt helps to replenish minerals crucial to our skins overall metabolism.
- Add 1/4 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. (It is packed pull of vitamins, minerals and good enzymes. Apple Cider Vinegar is one of THE best ways to cleanse your body of bad bacteria and boost your immune system.
- Add some aromatherapy oils if desired. We prefer to add mint leaves, lavender flowers, chamomile or any other fancy flowers to make our bath not only look SO insta ready, but to make it smell amazing!!
- SWISH the bath around, so all the magic ingredients do their thangggg (Don’t worry about waiting for the salt crystals to dissolve before you get in, they take ages- so hop in when it’s all mixed)
Time to soak...
Once your bath is ready, you want to soak for 20-40 minutes. Make sure you drink lots during your bath, to make sure you don’t overheat. You will notice you start to sweat after a few minutes in - this is just your body expelling the nasty toxins from your skin.
If you do start to feel too hot during your bath, add some cool water until you feel comfortable.
Relax!!
Once you have got into the bathroom, try and leave all the outdoor stresses and unwanted thoughts behind you. We like to imagine the toxins leaving our body and all the good vitamins and nutrients entering in their place. You can try meditation to also help calm your body during a detox bath. Breathe in through the nose, loosen your neck, face, hands and stomach area. Relax and soften each part of your body. Consciously releasing body tension throughout your bath will really help you relax.
When it is time to get out of the bath, make sure you stand up and get out of the bath slowly. Your body has been working hard and you may get lightheaded or feel weak and drained. Oils and salts can also make your bath slippery, so make sure you stand up with care. Wrap yourself in a soft blanket or towel after getting out of the bath and this way you can continue your detoxifying process for a few more hours after the bath.
Rehydrate & Relax:
Make sure you have lots of water after your detox, as when your body detoxes the fluids need to be replaced. It is recommend that you drink 1 extra litre of water following your detox.
After your bath, brush down your skin again. You can use your hands or a loofah. this can help the release of toxins further. Use long, gentle sweeping strokes aimed towards the heart. Then sit down and relax for the remainder of the day. The perfect way to prepare for summer skin….let’s glow girls!
