Get to know your Skin Type

We all know that skin care can be a little overwhelming. There are billions of brands out there with so many different lotions and potions to tighten, brighten and 'insta-filter' your skin; but what products are right for YOUR skin?

It’s important to know what skin type you are, as skincare is definitely not a “one size fits all” sorta’ thing. Products work differently on different skin types, so it’s important to know what your putting onto your skin and if it is benefiting you in the long run. You wouldn’t put diesel in a petrol car, so why put the wrong products on your skin.

Don’t fear, Be.Beauty have broken down some of the skin jargon and noted our favourite way and some other well-known ways to determine your skin type.

THE BASIC SKIN TYPES

                                                                             NORMAL SKIN
-Feels clean, soft and bouncy to touch.
-Skin doesn’t feel tight.
-Skin is naturally radiant due to even colouring.
-Normal skin has medium sized pours.
-Doesn’t experience breakouts that often.
-Normal skin type would not observe many changes in their skin throughout the day.

COMBINATION SKIN
-This skin type is similar to the Normal skin type, however has slightly more oil (Sebum) in the skin.
-Oily areas are concentrated in just the T-Zone area.
-Around the rest of the face is dry and smooth, especially on the cheeks.
-Localized dry patches can also be observed. Especially in the Autumn and Winter. (Product info in the next blog post)

OILY SKIN
-Oily skin tends to have a shine, and can feel slightly oily to touch.
-Oily skin types have large pores, especially in the T-Zone area (Forehead, nose and chin)
-The skin tends to be thicker, rough, irregular texture and colouring.
-It can be prone to whiteheads, blackheads and clogged pores. These tend to appear all over the face and not just in specific areas.
-Oily skin is very common in teenagers and young adults, though it is rare in people 35 years and older.

DRY SKIN
-Dry skin feels tight, rough, flaky and dry.
-Dry skin has very fine pores
-Dry skin is prone to wrinkles, aging and irritation.
-Often feels tight after washing, especially if you have been using the wrong products or in a very dry atmosphere.
-Fine lines can develop around the eye area fairly early.

SENSITIVE SKIN
-Sensitive skin has fine pores; the thickness of the skin tends to be thin.
-It tends to get irritated easily.
-This skin type can easily flush, have rashes or red patches.
-It might feel rough and dry especially during the afternoon and evening. n
-This skin type can also extend to any skin types including oily, but it mostly effects people who are prone to allergic conditions, in particular eczema, asthma and hay fever.

TESTING YOUR SKIN TYPE

  • Remove any make-up, rinse your face with water and pat it dry with a clean flannel
  • Leave to air dry for 1 hour.
  • Place a single layer of clean white tissue (Peel apart a tissue and it will give you two/three thin layers) over your face and press it over the surface, making sure you press it gently into the corners and crevices of your face.
  • Leave it for a few minutes, then lift off and inspect the results:

Oily Skin: The tissue will stick to sebum (the oily, waxy product that you skin produces) it will also stick to any oily spots and areas of the tissue will become translucent.

Normal/Combination skin: The tissue will only stick to your T-Zone, translucent areas won't appear.

Dry/ Sensitive Skin: The tissue wont stick to any areas of your face, as your face wont be producing enough sebum.

Tomorrow we will be discussing all the products that are the best for each skin type, so if you are still unsure which products you need for your skin. Don't worry- Be. Beauty is at hand to help and get your skin looking GLORIOUS before Christmas!

Other Methods of Checking Skin Types

Try an Online quiz
There are hundreds of online quizzes to test your skin type. We don’t know how accurate they can be, but they are a bit of fun and can also help to point you in the right direction. Personally, Be.Beauty loves the Teen Vogue’s skin type test. This is a quick and easy way of testing out your skin type- just remember to answer the questions honestly.

Visit a dermatologist
Probably the most accurate way of getting to know your skin properly is seeking professional help and guidance. If you do have particularly problematic skin, they can give you tips and tricks to help.

VISUAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
You can usually tell just by looking and touching your beautiful face, what skin type you have.

As soon as you wake up, wash your face and go about your day.
To do this accurately, you need to make sure that you don’t do anything to compromise your natural skin. So, after you have washed your face and allowed to air dry, don’t apply any product or makeup. We would even go as far as saying try not to touch your face at all. Anything your hands touch will get transferred onto your face and will effect how you see your skin.

When you get to around midday, go and inspect you face:
  • If your entire face is looking and feeling shinier compared to the morning, you have oily skin.
  • If only your T-Zone looks shiny but the rest of your face is looking and feeling pretty similar to the morning, you have combination skin type.
  • If your skin looks the same as it did in the morning, you have normal skin.
  • If you see and feel dry patches, a little peeling and redness, you have dry/sensitive skin.

Remember, your skin is always changing.

Don’t panic- with the ever adapting environment, age, diet and hormonal changes effecting you day after day, your skin will constantly be changing. Your skin type is not permanent and whatever skin type you have now is not set in stone.

Some people are super lucky and have incredibly glowing skin for their entire life, whilst others will have to work more carefully with their skin. However, with a bit of attention and care towards using the correct products, we can battle that constant oily T-zone, dry or flakey skin and even that occasional breakout.

Look after your skin to maintain that beautiful face of yours!

You are beautiful and your face deserves the best.
